Annual Report for the year to 5th April 2020
The Timios Trust was established in 1999 in memory of Tim Skipp and provides travel bursaries to people undertaking Christian Service projects. This Report covers the Trust’s 21st year of operation. Since the formation of the Trust we have awarded 457 bursaries amounting to just under £149,416 while funds currently in hand are in excess of £114k.
The Trust continues to rely on one-off gifts as well as more regular giving. We are truly grateful to all those who have given a donation, and are very aware that the Trust can only exist as a result of such generosity. Our special thanks go to those who give to the Trust in a regular and committed way, often because of special links with Tim and his family that stretch back for many years. In terms of our donations in 2019-20, we received £2828, a slightly lower figure than usual and in part the result of the death of one of our most supportive and generous donors. We continue to monitor our financial situation carefully in order to ensure a long life for the Trust.
Within this financial year we awarded 20 new bursaries for trips which have lasted from six weeks to a year and totalling £4725. These bursaries, which ranged in amount between £100 and £450, have helped applicants travel on Christian Service projects to destinations across the world, and the Trust has now assisted volunteers to travel to eighty different countries. Our sponsored volunteers have travelled this year to Malawi (with Tear Fund), Vanuatu, Kenya, India and Spain. There has been a welcome diversity in the activities, including work in orphanages, hospitals, youth camps and clean water projects.
This year we were very pleased that there was an almost equal number of awards given to men and women. We gave 11 awards to men which represents a reversal in the trend of the last few years of their being considerably in the minority. We hope very much to continue to receive applications from a broad demographic and aspire to an equal balance of genders and ages in the awarding of our bursaries.
In common with all charities in 2020, the Trust has been affected by the outbreak of Covid-19. For a charity whose purpose is to provide travel bursaries, the global reduction in travel has particularly been felt. It has had an impact on some of our bursary-holders who have been prevented from travelling and who have consequently returned their bursary. We obviously envisage a reduction in the number of applicants we receive, although we are hopeful that domestic projects may be quickest to recover in number, and that eventually the decrease in the pandemic will allow us to continue God’s work through our bursary scheme.
The Timios Trust is a Registered Charity (No. 1077516) and is always pleased to receive donations and bursary enquiries.
