Annual Report for the year to 5th April 2019

The Timios Trust was established in 1999 in memory of Tim Skipp and provides travel bursaries to young people undertaking Christian Service projects. This Report covers the Trust’s 20th year of operation, a milestone which we intend to celebrate with an event of thanksgiving in late 2019 or early in 2020. Since the formation of the Trust we have awarded 437 bursaries totalling £144,691, while funds currently in hand are in excess of £133,000.

Through a combination of the generous support of regular donors, fundraising activities and one-off gifts, the Trust has been able to support all the applications within its published criteria which it has received to date. This year we awarded 22 new bursaries, totalling £6,875 which represents a small increase on 2018. These bursaries, which ranged in amount between £150 and £600, have helped applicants travel on Christian Service projects to destinations across the world and the Trust has now assisted volunteers to travel to eighty different countries.

We were pleased that there was a slight increase in the number of bursaries awarded to male applicants. We gave roughly a third of the 22 bursaries in 2019 to men. For many years the majority of our applicants have been female and we are keen to have a balance of genders and ages.

Bursaries this year were almost in line with funds received from donations and fundraising events. We were grateful for funds from two sources this year. First was a generous gift from the Benny O Shea golf tournament and, the second, proceeds from a concert in Lyford, Oxfordshire. We continue to be touched by the kind and regular giving of friends who knew Tim, who often remember his birthday in this way. The current funds in hand are of the same order as the total bursaries awarded to date, and it is therefore anticipated that the Trust has many years of valuable active service ahead.

The board of trustees said farewell at the end of 2018 to Richard Budden, who had served diligently as the Secretary of the Trust since its inception. His sterling contribution to the charity was gratefully noted. The new Secretary is a recent trustee appointment, Dr Helen Skipp, Tim’s mother. This means that all of Tim’s immediate family are now trustees, along with trusted friends and professionals, John Levick, Susannah Palmer and Neil Shaw.

The Trustees were saddened by the death of Peter McMahon who, for many years, had conducted independent examination of our accounts. We give thanks for his contribution to the running of the trust, along with everyone who has supported our work this year, so that Christian young people can explore both their gifts of service and longer term vocations in the wider world. This year our accounts were independently examined by Mr Andy Farquhar, to whom we offer our thanks.
